How Superpower launched a members-only marketplace on Shopify

Superpower wasn’t just looking to build a typical Shopify store. They wanted to create a members-only marketplace that could support hundreds of products across dozens of brands,  all tied to personalized health plans inside their app. The goal was to recommend products based on a member’s onboarding survey and bloodwork, and give them access to high-quality, vetted products at a discount. It needed to feel like a part of the Superpower experience, work seamlessly with the app, and support everything from supplements to wearables, all while handling multiple vendors and fulfillment types in the backend.

“This has been huge for Superpower members. It makes these products more accessible, and it also opens up the ability for us to recommend them directly in the app.”

The problem

There’s no playbook for building this kind of marketplace on Shopify

When Superpower came to Platter, they wanted to build a brand-new marketplace to support their members. It needed to work within the structure of Shopify, while doing a bunch of things Shopify doesn’t really do out of the box.

The marketplace needed to support a wide mix of products: affiliate listings, dropshipped items, and subscriptions. Some vendors required custom PDPs. Others had unique review requirements. On top of that, everything had to be standardized in the backend so the team could manage it all without relying on devs every time they needed to make a change.

They also wanted the store to feel like the rest of Superpower. It needed to have the same style, same experience, and to be gated so only members could shop. That meant integrating with Shopify Multipass, syncing with their web app, and embedding product recommendations straight into the member’s health journey.

This wasn’t just a store launch. It was about laying the groundwork for a complex, scalable marketplace that feels simple to use for members and for the team running it.

The solution

A flexible, branded storefront built for scalability

Platter worked with Superpower to design and build a custom Shopify store that could meet their long list of requirements while still being fast and easy to manage.

Here’s what we built:

  • A custom CMS setup using advanced metafields to power structured, standardized product data.
  • Flexible templates for different fulfillment models including dropshipping, affiliates, and subscription-enabled products.
  • Shopify Multipass gating so the marketplace is only accessible to verified Superpower members.
  • Embedded app integration, so members can see recommended products in their plan and add them to cart instantly.
  • A fast, intuitive search experience with filters based on health goals, categories, and other attributes.

The design closely mirrors the Superpower app, so members don’t feel like they’re being kicked to a separate site. And on the backend, the team can easily manage content using metafields.

Conclusion

A flexible marketplace that's easy to manage

What Superpower needed didn’t exist out of the box, but they didn’t need to go headless or over-engineer a solution. With Platter’s theme architecture and a tightly scoped custom build, they launched a high-performing, scalable marketplace that feels native to their app and easy to manage on the backend.

The result is a storefront that fits seamlessly into the Superpower user experience, supports their long-term vision, and gives the team the control they need to keep moving fast.
