How Big Ass Calendar Increased Average Order Value 23%

Big Ass Calendar was running on an outdated Shopify theme, and customers had a hard time finding anything beyond the flagship calendar. Platter rebuilt the storefront in June 2026, redesigning the product pages, collections and cart. In the four months since launch, average order value is up 23% year over year.

The Challenge

Big Ass Calendar started as a landing page on entrepreneur Jesse Itzler’s site and became its own company in early 2025. The new company kept the same Shopify theme and added to it as the business grew.

Over time, the site got harder to manage, even for co-founder Taylor Prokes.

“I was having a hard time finding things that I knew were there. I know everything that’s on the website, so if I’m having a hard time finding things, then people who have just been to our website for the first time are never going to find it.”

Customers knew the big calendar, but many never found the planner, the smaller Mini or the accessories. Collection pages listed every color as its own product card, and product details sat behind a single accordion that almost nobody opened. Shoppers often bought more than one calendar, but there were no bundles.

The Build

Platter worked with the Big Ass Calendar team to rebuild their store. The goal was to design a store that was optimized for conversion, where shoppers could easily find the full range of products and were incentivized to increase their order size.

One product page

Big Ass Calendar’s catalog is more complex than it looks. The same calendar comes in Big and Mini sizes and as a calendar-year Big Ass or an academic-year Big Class, and each size and style is a separate product in Shopify. Platter built a product page that stitches them into one buy box, so shoppers switch size and style without going back to the collection. Collection pages now show one card per product, with color swatches and a quick add button.

Built for bigger orders

The rebuild was scoped around lifting average order value by about 25%. Platter added a Build Your Bundle page where the discount grows as shoppers add more, and a bulk order card that lays out every variant in a quantity table and shows the savings at each tier. The cart shows progress toward free shipping and recommends products based on what’s already in it. Bundle discounts run on Shopify Functions, and cart recommendations moved from a third-party upsell app to Shopify’s own Search & Discovery.

“I don’t even think people will realize necessarily that we had a new website; they’ll just have a nicer experience.”

Build Your Bundle page, with a progress bar showing 10% off at two items, 15% at three and 25% at five. Three calendars are in the bundle and the cart button shows $127.47, down from $149.97.

Bulk orders page, with the discount tiers pinned across the top: 20% off for 10–99 items, 25% for 100–499, 30% for 500–999 and 40% for 1,000 or more. Below, a quantity table lists every color of the calendar, and ten blue calendars come to $399.92, a saving of $99.98.

The Results

Sixteen weeks after launch, Big Ass Calendar’s customers are spending more per order and adding to cart more often than they did a year ago.

  • Average order value up 23% year over year
  • Add-to-cart rate up 24% year over year

“It’s a big investment, so there’s nerves at the beginning that you’re not going to get what you’re hoping for. But that went away really quick because your team led with expertise the whole time, and we saw results pretty immediately.”
